Not all bathroom experiences are created equal. But when you’re designing a bathroom for your home, or a loved one, you have the opportunity to adapt the design with products to make it as comfortable and safe for the user as possible.
Whether you’re planning ahead so you or a loved one can stay at home longer, or perhaps due to an injury, it’s worth considering modifying your product choices to those that make life easier and safer in the bathroom space. Here are some handy ideas:
Today’s toilet designs come in all shapes and sizes. There are also toilets designed specifically to accommodate different needs which can help with your mobility.
For example, ‘Easy Height’ toilets have extra height to allow for easy transfer on/off the toilet. Caroma care toilets also feature optional armrests, and raised flush buttons to make life even easier. Caroma’s latest range of assistive toilets are designed with market leading Cleanflush® rimless technology, making cleaning so much easier!
Tapware is often described as the jewellery of the bathroom as it’s usually the most stylish aspect of a modern bathroom, and care tapware is no exception. Both a mixer or traditional three-piece tap set can be made easier to operate. Mixers offer an inherent simplicity with it’s single lever and ceramic cartridge technology, however where necessary the handle can be changed to a longer handle to provide extra leverage when operating. Traditional three-piece tapware doesn’t have to be difficult to operate. Where the tap is designed with a ceramic cartridge you’ll find the ease-of-use is ongoing and the tap won’t operate differently over time like the old washer (jumper vale) designs.
A wall-hung basin is the best long term solution for a care bathroom as it allows more space underneath if a wheelchair or similar mobility device is being used. You may not need the space now, but this can be a reality later on.
Alternatively, if a vanity is a must, a semi-recessed basin is beneficial as it overhangs the vanity slightly, allowing access to the tapware. Inset basins which are dropped into a vanity can become troublesome with less mobility over time causing expensive renovations which could have been avoided.
Grab Rail Showers
Regarded as the most dangerous part of the bathroom, grab rail showers offer added safety so you can keep on enjoying your own showering independence. Grab rail showers allow you to adjust the height of the shower head or detach from the cradle to wash where you please.
Grab rails are an important safety addition to a bathroom. It’s important NOT to rely on standard towel rails to hold your weight when its required. Grab rails are load bearing meaning they can take up to approx. 110kg force if you slip. Caroma’s new Opal Support rail collection will integrate into any bathroom space and what’s more they look amazing!
Shower seats are designed to make showering easier and more comfortable.
Shower seats are mounted to the wall under or near the shower and then fold up when not being used. Shower seats are another source of prolonging your independence while showering. The new Opal Support shower seat is the ideal solution and will look fantastic in any bathroom.
At Caroma we have an understanding and a passion to enable wellness and support Australians no matter which stage of life you are tasked with. Explore our Collection here.
