Redrawing the future of housing

The first step needed is a shift in mentality to acknowledge the current failures in today’s global housing model. We must understand “What is housing and where do we want to go?”

Issues like housing affordability, mortgage stress or quality and location vs price were not created by the pandemic, but the pandemic did highlight how fragile and mistaken the current model is. Can we re-draw and change course rather than just react to budgets, planning laws, market and client demands?

The first step needed is a shift in mentality to acknowledge the current failures in today’s global housing model.  We must understand “What is housing and where do we want to go?”

Issues like housing affordability, mortgage stress or quality and location vs price were not created by the pandemic, but the pandemic did highlight how fragile and mistaken the current model is. Can we re-draw and change course rather than just react to budgets, planning laws, market and client demands?

Is the solution to be found in architecture? Or in the ownership of land? Or in the economic and planning policies? All of the above will be debated.

So what is housing?

Housing is more than a house
Housing is a basic human right and not a commodity for sale.
Housing is more than a parking lot for people and should not be something mass produced such as T-shirts
Housing cannot be seen as an isolated piece but rather as a part of the community and the city

When designing we must not forget the people who will inhabit these spaces, always ask yourself “Would I live there? “

Let’s shape our future rather than letting it emerge!
